How a new build home can be energy efficient

Greener, energy efficient and kinder to the planet are frequent items on the wish list when we speak to new clients.
A new build allows you to incorporate these aspects – because when you start from scratch, they can be planned in rather than retro-fitted; and often, it’s not financially viable to do so.

Here are some of the ways we add energy efficiency:

Insulation
High quality, effective insulation in the roof space, walls and floors to keep cold air out and warm air in. Correct installation is always critical to ensure the maximum levels of energy efficiency. 

Airtight construction
Detail is key and our trades people work to high standards that pass our rigorous inspections to ensure everything is airtight; around windows, pipe penetrations, roof junctions and wall joins.
We take our time to get it right.

Efficient heating systems
We work with our clients to choose the best heating system for them based on their budget, requirements and to suit the home we are building.
We look at energy goals, future costs, maintenance and balancing upfront costs with long-term savings.

Options include:

• Air source heat pumps (ASHP)
• Ground source heat pumps (GSHP)
• Modern condensing gas boilers
• Underfloor heating (especially with heat pumps)
• Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)

High quality windows & doors
We always look to spend as much budget as we can on quality, high-performing windows.
Both the glass and frames are important to contribute to energy efficiency.

Renewable energy
We work with every client to look at which renewable options are realistic for the plot, design, budget, and future plans.
We will consider technologies including both solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and battery storage systems

Orientation
We consider how layout and orientation can contribute to energy efficiency, considering:

• South-facing glazing to capture solar gain
• Roof overhangs to reduce overheating
• Fewer windows on the north side
• Zoned living for more efficient heating

Smart technology
Smart technology allows the homeowner to truly harness the benefits of an energy-efficient home.
Heating when needed, warming water without wasting energy, and being programmed to work when required or via an app.
Turn the heating on when you leave work – if you’re going to be late home, it won’t have been on all evening heating rooms without people in them, for example.
