Barn Conversion, East Kent

Client Brief

This client wanted to convert an old barn into a stunning property, which they planned to use as their new home. We worked with them on the entire project from initial design to completion.

The spec for this 10-month conversion included:

  • 2 bedrooms
  • 2 bathrooms
  • Oak finishes throughout

The Project

Beautiful real oak finishes were a key aspect of this project for our client, who was keen to bring the barn back to life while preserving the character of the original building. We drew on our experience of working with heritage properties to preserve as much of the original oak frame as possible and blend new oak into the structure, where necessary, for a seamless finish.

We also worked with them to create designs that utilised the wood as a feature wherever possible, including the flooring, staircase and internal doors, skirting boards, kitchen and worktops.

It takes skill and expertise to sympathetically convert a barn, enhancing its stunning features and character to create an amazing home. Working with the unique quirks and characteristics of these beautiful structures can breathe new life into an old, disused building and preserve their charm for years to come, as was the case with this project.

Challenges

Keeping as much oak on show as possible meant the plastering was a time-consuming and detailed job. However, it was worth it – the final effect is stunning and really showcases the existing structure.

The outcome

The result is a lovely barn conversion, which combines the rustic nature of the original oak frame with new oak supporting structures to create a series of unique and individual spaces.

Our views on the project…

“It’s always a joy to work with a client who shares our passion for sympathetically converting and restoring an old building, giving it a new purpose. Understanding and enhancing the materials and properties of agricultural buildings takes extra time and skill but the results are always worth it.

“On this project, the oak is the star of the show. Reusing much of the wood from the original barn preserves its history and adds a wonderful warmth and sense of character to the property.

“We’re proud to have created a beautiful home and given an old, disused building a new lease of life.”
